Our Services
Davis Place Apartments offers single-room occupancy (SRO) apartments that include all utilities and a free laundry facility. Each room comes furnished with a bed, wardrobe, small refrigerator, ceiling fans, and blinds. The buildings also feature community kitchens and dining areas, large community areas with TVs and small libraries. We have four buildings, each with its unique characteristics:
- Davis Place I: a smoking facility located nearest the Bee Branch project on Garfield Ave, with 19 units available.
- Davis Place II: also a smoking facility with 19 units, a large parking lot, and off-street parking readily available.
- Davis Place III: a smoking facility with 12 units, located a little further away from the parking lot but with on-street parking available.
- Davis Place IV: our only non-smoking facility with 12 units available, located near The Hairport Salon and has its parking lot in the rear of the building.
Each year, we put together community events on Father's Day and Christmas, providing food and socialization opportunities for tenants and their families. We gratefully accept food and other item donations from local businesses and individuals, which we distribute among the four buildings and put in community refrigerators and kitchens.
History of the Davis Place
The history of Davis Place Apartments begins with Wartburg College, where our first building, Davis Place I, now stands. Wartburg College, founded in 1852 by Pastor Wilhelm Lohe of Bavaria, was originally located at 511 Garfield Avenue. The college was moved several times, with the name Wartburg given to it when it was located in rural St. Sebald, due to the resemblance of the wooded countryside to the Thuringian Forest where the Wartburg Castle is located.
In 1972, Ray Davis purchased the residence at 515 Garfield and later purchased the Wartburg building in 1978, which was then converted into a correctional facility for men. In 1985, the correctional facility moved, leaving a vacant apartment building next door. Ray Davis bought the building, intending to restore it but found that it was unsafe for restoration. Consequently, Davis Place was born, with our first building established in 2000. Since then, three more buildings have been added, providing affordable and safe housing for many individuals.
In summary, Davis Place Apartments, started with the mission of providing safe and affordable housing, has grown over the years, and expanded to four buildings. We remain committed to our values of acceptance, empowerment, compassion, and communication, and we continuously strive to serve individuals and the community better. Our services include providing single-room occupancy apartments, community kitchens and dining areas, large community areas, and annual community events, all aimed at improving the quality of life for the individuals associated with our organization.
