Building Memories, One Property at a Time

Laying the Foundation

Founded in 1820, Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company built its success on the robust coal industry in Pennsylvania. From its humble beginnings, the company expanded its operations, acquiring thousands of acres of land strategically located around the waterways that would transport their mined coal to markets in Philadelphia. The company's vision extended beyond the realm of resource extraction. Recognizing the inherent beauty and recreational potential of the surrounding landscape, Lehigh Coal and Navigation also pioneered the development of recreational facilities for public use, anticipating the growing leisure industry. Following the Quaker tradition of utilizing the Pocono Mountains as havens for family retreats, Lehigh Coal and Navigation constructed Split Rock Lodge and an accompanying ski slope on Lake Harmony in 1941. This venture ambitiously sought to establish a premier executive resort, offering a respite from the bustle of city life.

Creating the Attractions

When Split Rock Lodge was later sold, the ski resort continued to operate independently, rebranding itself as Big Boulder Ski Area. This marked a significant milestone, as Big Boulder became the first commercial ski resort in Pennsylvania. The resort further revolutionized the skiing industry with the first commercial application of snowmaking, a pioneering technique that would prove instrumental in solidifying the success of winter sports in the Pocono Mountains. These early endeavors showcased the company's foresight in shaping not only the economic landscape but also the recreational identity of the region.
